CleverSphere or ChatGPT for studying?
Both use AI but solve different problems. An honest comparison for exam preparation at university.
In short: an AI chat like ChatGPT is great when you want something explained. CleverSphere is built to get you from your lecture notes to the exam: flashcards with spaced repetition, a study plan up to your exam date and practice exams with a grade. The two combine well, and you can try both for free.
What an AI chat like ChatGPT does well
General AI chats are excellent when you have a specific question: understanding a term, seeing a derivation step by step, getting an example for an abstract concept or checking the wording of your own text. They cover a huge range of topics and respond flexibly to whatever you ask.
- Explanations in plain words, again and from another angle
- Examples, analogies and follow-up questions on a topic
- Help with wording and structuring your thoughts
- Useful for almost any subject and question
Where a chat falls short for exam prep
Exam preparation is more than answering questions. What matters is that you retain the content of your notes over weeks and can recall it yourself in the exam. That needs a routine a chat does not take over by itself: it responds to what you ask, but does not plan on its own what you should review when.
In practice you have to remember to review cards yourself, keep track of which chapters are still missing and write suitable instructions for every exercise again. With several modules and exam dates this quickly gets messy.
What CleverSphere does differently
CleverSphere is not a general chat but a study platform built around your lecture notes. You upload your notes and assign them to a module with an exam date. The app organises the rest:
- Flashcards from your notes that come back just before you would forget them (spaced repetition)
- A study plan that counts back from your exam date and fits your preferred study times
- Practice exams from your notes with a grade and feedback, in the style of your module
- Active recall, the Feynman technique and multiple choice as ready-made exercises
- An AI tutor that answers questions about your notes rather than the whole internet
- Everything organised by module, with progress and a study streak

How to combine both
- 1
Upload your notes to CleverSphere
Create the module with its exam date. Flashcards, summary and study plan are generated from your notes.
- 2
Review the due cards every day
The app shows you what is due today. Ten to twenty minutes a day are often enough if you start early.
- 3
Dig deeper when something is unclear
Use the AI tutor for your notes or, for general explanations, any AI chat you like.
- 4
Take a practice exam before the real one
The grade and feedback show you which chapters are still missing while you still have time.
Frequently asked questions
Is CleverSphere free?
Yes. The free plan is free forever: 2 sets of notes, 20 AI flashcards per set, 3 summaries, 1 practice exam and 10 tutor messages. You need neither a credit card nor a trial. Plus costs €5.99 per month or €19.99 per semester (4 months), Pro €9.99 per month.
Does CleverSphere replace ChatGPT?
Not necessarily. For general questions unrelated to your notes, a general AI chat is still handy. CleverSphere takes over exam preparation with your own material: cards, review, study plan and practice exams.
Which AI does CleverSphere use?
CleverSphere uses Google’s paid Gemini API. Your content is not used to train the AI.
Where is my data stored?
The app, the database and your notes are stored on Hetzner servers in Germany. For AI features, the necessary excerpts are sent to the Gemini API. Details are in the privacy policy.
Who is CleverSphere for?
For university students aged 18 and over, mainly in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The app is available in German and English.
